Description

With the CrossAim reticle eyepiece from Celestron you have a versatile tool if you want to use your telescope for more than just a fleeting glimpse of the stars.

Astrophotographers have long used crosshair eyepieces to check and correct tracking during long exposures. To do this, align the crosshairs so that the illuminated threads are parallel to the axes of the telescope. In this way, you can immediately see in which direction corrections need to be made. The easiest way to do this is to set the guide star slightly out of focus so that it fills the intersection of the double crosshairs. Thus, the eyepiece offers a cheap alternative to expensive autoguider cameras, which today often relieve ambitious amateur astronomers of tracking control. The dimmable illumination does not outshine the stars so that they can also use faint stars.

A reticule eyepiece also increases the accuracy when setting up the telescope. For telescopes with GoTo computer control, the reference stars must be set as precisely as possible in the centre of the image field: With the reticule you can easily centre them exactly.

Astrophotographers know that the most precise way to align a mount to the north is to shine. This involves setting a star in the telescope and using the drift to adjust the mount so that it is aligned exactly parallel to the earth's axis and no more set-up errors affect tracking accuracy. Only in this way are long exposed astrophotos possible even with long focal lengths.

With an optional Barlow lens you can increase the magnification and thus the measuring accuracy even more if necessary.
