Description
This switching power supply for outdoor use was especially designed to meet the needs of amateur astronomers in northern latitudes. This 12.8 V/1.5 A fixed voltage power supply with reverse polarity protected protective-disconnect right-angle plug fits for example to all smaller Celestron mounts (Advanced GT, NexStar SE, NexStar SLT, LCM, CPC) and offers great advantages at a slightly higher price compared to normal indoor plug-in power supplies. It also fits all other common telescope mounts and devices with this power requirement and plug (tip positive/plus inside, plug diameter 5.5mm)
Common plug-in power supplies with 12 V nominal voltage are designed for operation "in the living room". When used outdoors, the effective voltage drops significantly at low temperatures. Already at -10°C the voltage can drop to 10.5 V - then the operation of many electrical devices becomes unreliable. Especially a telescopic electronic tries to compensate the missing voltage by higher power consumption and motor synchronization fluctuations occur, which are usually attributed to the electronics of the mount - although the insufficient power supply is the actual cause.
The Outdoor-Telescope-Power II power supply unit therefore supplies a DC voltage of 12.8 Volt/1.5 A over the entire AC voltage range from 100 to 240 V that is common worldwide. Even at extreme minus temperatures, the voltage cannot drop so low that the electronic components or the motors of a telescope mount would suffer damage. With 1.5 A/19 Watt continuous output, there is sufficient power reserve even at full load, even with heavy instrument loads on the mount and large load changes. In addition to the increased basic voltage, the thermal working range of -25° to +40° is optimally adapted for outdoor operation.
The supply cable between the power supply unit and the angled plug is extended to 2.5m, so that the power supply unit does not become a tripping hazard and can be conveniently stored near the floor. The angled plug protects the telescope electronics from damage to the socket and the power supply unit from cable breaks or other damage. If the cable is accidentally stepped on, the plug socket is not torn out of the telescope by lateral pulling, but the connection is released in a straight line at the coupling point in front of the right-angle plug.
