Description

RASA 36 - Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph

The Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrographs (RASA) are telescopes for space surveillance, Space Situational Awareness (SSA), other scientific applications and professional wide-angle astrophotography. They offer excellent value for money in terms of aperture, speed, field of view and optical performance. The RASA design features a comfortable camera position in the primary focus but away from the telescope tube and a flat image plane that allows small spot sizes to the edge of a wide field. The result is images that are free from optical errors such as field curvature, coma and astigmatism.

The RASA 36cm is the further development of the RASA 11" and the first Celestron primary focus lens which was consistently designed for scientific applications and for space surveillance tasks. This includes not only an uncompromising optical performance over the entire field of view, but also the mechanical details of the mirror bearing and focusing - and last but not least the adjustment of the optics and the positional stability of all optical elements with continuous focusability.

The version with 36 cm aperture is the largest and with f/2.2 the fastest telescope of its kind available "off the shelf". In contrast to most telescopes, which only focus visible light (400-700 nm), the RASA 36 cm focuses an extended spectral range (400-900 nm), so that a suitable camera sensor can detect a brighter signal. The RASA 36 cm also has a newly developed focusing system that ensures easy and stable focusing. Rasa 36cm Sensor Size

The large backfocus distance (77.5 mm) of the RASA 36 provides sufficient working distance for a wide range of image sensors. A custom camera adapter can be added for a field of view up to 4.4 degrees.

The Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt-Astrograph makes it very easy to create impressive astrophotographs with modern DSLR or astronomical CCD cameras. The fast f/2.2 system with a large field of view has two major advantages over classical photography at f/10: Much shorter exposure times and therefore less susceptibility to tracking errors. This means you can get better shots in less time and often even do without an autoguider.

The Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph is the legitimate successor to Celestron's Schmidt camera, which was still used with film negatives in the 1970s.

Today, with CCD sensors the same size as slide negatives or even larger, this Schmidt Astrograph offers a full 43mm image circle, so you can get needle-sharp stars even on large sensors - up to 52mm can be used. This large illuminated image circle and a focal length of only 620mm make it the perfect instrument for photographing large regions of the sky and extended objects. You can create mosaic images of the entire sky or hunt variable stars, supernovae or comets.

Oprical Performance
The Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph has a newly designed optical system with a four-lens corrector with rare-earth lenses that suppress colour and imaging errors such as coma and field curvature. Never before has an astrograph in this price range delivered this optical quality and spot size over the entire field of view. The design also allows very low vignetting.

Other features
Other features such as a special linear brass mount for the focuser and the Feathertouch micro-focuser allow you to make the exact settings for the perfect image. A 12V MagLev fan shortens the cool down time and ensures an ideal airflow through the tube and the dust-protected vents.

The Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph was developed as a complete system for astrophotography and delivers the best results with DSLR and astronomical CCD cameras. Every element up to the thickness of the glass in the fully multi-coated optical window or optional filters, every component of the system has been considered and matched.

The Mounting

The CGX-L mount is the big brother of the CGX and carries instruments weighing up to about 34 kilograms - that's enough for even the largest Celestron telescopes and accessories. With a dead weight of less than 24 kg for the mount and 21 kg for the tripod, it is still easy to transport. Thanks to the large carrying handles, it is even easier to transport than a comparable, slightly lighter classic parallactic mount!

The CGX-L is designed for small observatories and remote operation, with emphasis on a good payload-to-weight ratio, compact design and innovative details for your use of large telescopes, photographic equipment and the latest wireless accessories.

A key role is played here by the worm wheels, generously dimensioned at 144 mm, which enable smoother running even with heavy telescopes, and the dovetail clamp extended to 270 mm, which holds even large telescopes securely. For remote operation, there are optical sensors for home and limit positions, simplified settings for norting and improved cable routing. There are also mechanical and ergonomic improvements that make the mount even more stable, user-friendly and portable.

With the dual dovetail clamp for CG-5 (Vixen, Celestron) or CGE (3-inch) you can easily switch e.g. between small solar telescopes and large Schmidt-Cassegrains. In order to make photography fun, too, the mount has been equipped with powerful, fast-reacting motors that are connected to the axles via a stable toothed belt. The mount reacts almost immediately to control commands, even from an autoguider. There is no gear backlash, and since the worm wheels are also spring-loaded, the backlash is eliminated to a large extent - you do not need to readjust even with large temperature differences, worm and gear wheels have optimum contact.

The large screws are non-slip, so you can easily loosen or tighten them even when wearing gloves - the pole height adjustment has also been redesigned, so you can easily adjust the mount even when fully loaded. A polar finder will be available as an option, but is usually unnecessary: with the All-Star Polarign you can north the mount on any brighter star through the telescope, and for perfection shining is always superior to the polar finder. As a special feature, you can move the mount on the base plate of the extra-wide tripod head - this allows you to perfectly place the centre of gravity over the tripod, for the entire usable latitude range from 3 to 65° north or south latitude. The flat base can also be easily adapted to your own columns.

The large screws have a good grip, so you can use it with a photo mount. It is suitable for mobile use as well as for remote operation. Internal sensors ("switches") automatically bring the mount into the home position and prevent it from moving too far and hitting something when panning. The internal cabling is also for safety: all connections (power, hand controller, AUX and autoguider) are in the base of the mount and do not move with it.

The handheld controller can be controlled in the classic way via ASCOM and the handheld controller (with USB connection) via PC, or you can use the control software included in the scope of delivery, which was developed together with Planewave Instruments. Multipoint GoTo modelling, plate solving and focuser control are just some of the features you would normally need to upgrade for remote operation - with the CGX, this software is included. Here you don't need the hand controller, but can use the USB port of the mount directly.
