MRC Coating

The acronym MRC stands for "Multi Resistant Coating. The coating generally used for photographic filters atB+W and individual SCHNEIDER lenses is resistant in several respects: on the one hand, it is resistant to the effects of dust and moisture, and on the other hand, it offers significantly increased resistance to mechanical scratches on the glass surface. This hard, hydrophobic coating system makes it much easier to clean the filters.

An essential criterion for an excellent filter is the coating. Quality begins before the lens, and that is where the filter is placed, as we all know. A filter must not limit the performance of an optical system. MRC (Multi Resistant Coating)-coated filters have a multicoating layer on both sides (7+1 each), which ensures maximum anti-reflection and thus eliminates disturbing stray light. This makes it possible to achieve more brilliant colours and higher contrasts. Thanks to the low residual reflection (0.5%), MRC reliably prevents ghosting or double images, which can be caused by back reflection from the image sensor. In addition, MRC protects the filter from scratches thanks to its increased layer hardness, thus preserving the high optical quality. MRC is also dirt and water repellent. Cleaning becomes easier.

Filter mounts - the mechanical specialists

The important role of the filter mount and its mechanically complex task are often underestimated. Although mounts should hold the high-quality filter glass in place for life, they must not cause any tension in the glass that could reduce sharpness. B+W manufactures various types of mounts on CNC machines, mainly from sturdy brass. The filter glass is screwed in with a high-precision screw-in ring under torque control. In addition to the excellent F-Pro standard mount, which is suitable for telephoto lenses up to wide-angle focal lengths, B+W offers the very flat XS-Pro mount for super-wide-angle lenses. This virtually eliminates vignetting. It is the high-quality mounts that make a B+W filter a well-rounded piece of high-tech that you can rely on for many years.

Filter mounts fulfil an important task and, as a link in the chain of high-quality camera equipment, must meet the high mechanical requirements.

The new surface concept with its functional lacquering ensures easy and precise screwing and unscrewing, even with frequent filter changes. The new easy-grip knurls on the front facilitate handling. With a few exceptions, B+W filter mounts are precision-manufactured from sturdy and durable brass. The mounts are compact and can be used for wide-angle to telephoto lenses. A precise flat support with exact fixation secures the high-quality filter glass sufficiently and stress-free. The functional lacquering and easy-to-read laser inscription round off the well-known B+W quality and guarantee high functionality and excellent imaging quality.

High Performance Photo Filter

Quality starts before the lens, and as we know, that's where the filter is placed. A filter must not limit the performance of the shooting lens.

An essential criterion for a perfect B+W filter is a high-quality coating, also called anti-reflection coating. In a B+W filter, such layers are vapor-deposited using thin-film technology in a complex coating process. The coating material consists of special substrates that are applied in one or more layers, depending on the coating system. The degree of quality of a coating is determined by the antireflection coating thickness and the hardness and properties of the very top coating layer.

Technical Background I

Coating changes the reflective properties of an optical surface, such as the filter glass in this case. An uncoated glass surface reflects about 4% of the incident light rays.

The system of thin vapor-deposited layers is constructed in such a way that less light is reflected and more light passes through the layer itself and the glass. In this way, higher light transmission is achieved. As a result, more brilliant colors and higher image contrasts can be achieved.

Technical Background II

B+W filters are always coated on both sides. Ghosting or double images, which can be caused by back reflection from the image sensor, are thus attenuated many times over and, depending on the shooting situation, completely eliminated.

With the B+W single layer E, the light reflection on the filter surface is reduced to an average of less than 2 %. With a perfected multilayer system such as the B+W Multi Resistant Coating MRC and MRC nano, this residual reflection is well below 0.5 % and is thus virtually reflection-free.

Basic Filter Line

Due to the newly conceived rotating ring with optimized design for better grip, the alignment of polarizing filters is facilitated. The filter holders are made of sturdy brass and have a special functional coating for smooth screwing on and off. All circular polarizing filters from the new filter line are equipped with the proven MRC coating with 16x coating, enabling high-contrast and color-neutral images. The use of polarizing filters reduces annoying reflections and at the same time increases the color saturation in the image. In addition, the use of the filter keeps the front lens free from dirt such as dust, sand, scratches or fingerprints. With the introduction of the Basic filter line, packaging is changing from plastic boxes to sustainable cotton bags with a convenient drawstring. The Basic Circular Polarizing Filter is available in sizes ¯ 37 mm to ¯ 105 mm and is suitable for wide-angle to telephoto lenses.
